Mount Everest: snow melting at an alarming rate

Global warming continues to be a cause for concern for scientists. On the highest peak in the world (Everest), the ice is melting 80 times faster than it was formed.

The study published in the "Nature Portfolio Journal Climate and Atmospheric Science" underlined that in 25 years, the equivalent of 2 000 years of ice deposit has melted on the South Col of Mount Everest, losing nearly 55 meters of its thickness. The glacier has also lost its reflective power, making it even more fragile.

According to the same source, the melting of the Mount Everest ice began in 1950 and has accelerated in the late 1990s.
