A ferry carrying 243 passengers and crew members sank off the coast of Indonesia on 13 September after capsizing due to poor weather conditions, according to local authorities.
The Virgo Transport 8 was sailing between the islands of Java and Borneo when it went down. Ten days later, authorities said 28 people had been confirmed dead, while 107 others were still missing.
Search teams are continuing to scour the waters for survivors and victims, with the death toll expected to rise as the operation progresses.
Ferry accidents are a recurring problem in Indonesia, one of the world's largest archipelagic nations, comprising around 17 000 islands. The country's vast network of waterways, combined with unpredictable weather and concerns over marine safety standards, makes sea travel particularly hazardous in some areas.
