Online cancellation of French insurance contracts

The French Parliament passed a bill to simplify the procedures for cancelling insurance contracts underwritten online.

Insurers, mutual insurance companies and provident institutions are now required to provide their customers with a procedure allowing them to terminate their insurance contracts online, whether or not they have been underwritten electronically.

In other words, a "Cancellation" button, operational immediately or with a maximum of two "clicks", must be provided on the customer's interface.

This measure does not apply to contracts underwritten in a professional context.

The new legislation is expected to come into effect by 1 August 2023 at the latest. Starting from this date, all French insurers must integrate the electronic cancellation feature on their websites.

This initiative helps to fight against the artificial extension of contracts and to reduce the constraints imposed on consumers.
