Towards the development of an insurance policy for Kenyan fish farmers
The Kenyan government is currently working on a project to develop an insurance policy to provide coverage for fish farmers.
This initiative came in the wake of the massive fish kill in Lake Victoria, where farmers incurred losses exceeding 1 billion KES (8.08 million USD).
The coverage would protect fish farmers against several risks, including climate change. The latter has led to warmer waters and algal blooms that deplete oxygen, thus suffocating fish.
The sedimentation of organic matter and nutrients in the lake is another factor contributing to fish kills.
