Europe: fires cause significant damage
According to a study conducted by the Chaucer Group, the damage caused by forest fires in Europe went up by 75% in 2021.
The countries with the largest increases in burned areas are Bosnia and Herzegovina (246%), Croatia (130%), Italy (36%) and Greece (34%).
This sharp escalation is due to high temperatures and dry conditions which facilitate the rapid spread of fires.
This upward trend appears to persist through 2022. In June and July of this year, drought and extreme heat caused major forest fires on the continent, particularly in France and Spain.
