ME ratio: Management expenses ratio

The analysis of the combined ratio per class of business highlights the following points:

  • With the exception of bodily injury & health, all non-life classes of business have combined ratios below 100% for all years.
  • The combined ratio of the bodily injury and health class of business is consistently above 100% from 2011 to 2020 with a peak of 110.4% in 2014.
  • The combined ratio for motor insurance has never exceeded 100%. The highest rate is also reported in 2014 with 99%. The rate achieved by the market in 2020 is 85.3%, resulting in a technical margin of almost 15%.
  • The fire business is technically profitable over the entire period under review, with annual margins sometimes approaching 40%.
  • Despite the imbalance in the portfolios, marine insurance has extremely high annual margins of over 50%.
