Cyclone Freddy hits Malawi hardest
After severely affecting Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Madagascar, tropical storm Freddy headed south to Malawi on 13 March 2023.
The country recorded at least 676 deaths, 584 injuries and 538 missing persons. The Department of Disaster Management Affairs stated that the death toll could be even higher.
The cyclone was formed on 5 February 2023 off the coast of Australia before intensifying and crossing the Indian Ocean to reach Madagascar, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Cyclone Freddy has been active for more than 35 days and is considered to be the second longest typhoon in history after Hurricane John in 1994 which lasted 31 days.
