Deadly floods in Northern Italy

floods ItalyOn the night of 16 to 17 May 2023, torrential rains fell on the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy causing landslides and major flooding.

According to the authorities, 14 rivers overflowed and 23 municipalities were flooded.

As a provisional toll, nine people have lost their lives while several others are still missing. Some 5 000 residents were evacuated.

The devastating floods came two weeks after heavy rains which followed in their turn weeks of drought. This latest natural disaster has impaired the soil's ability to absorb water.

The Formula 1 Grand Prix of Imola in Emilia-Romagna that was scheduled for 21 May 2023 has been cancelled.
