According to Swiss Re, the cost of the natural catastrophes that occurred in 2006 amounts to 40 billion USD, 15 billion USD of which are insured damages, a toll by far lower than that of the previous year.
At the close of December 2006, only three events causing significant losses have been reported: Two tornadoes in the United States (2 billion USD) and one typhoon in Japan (1 billion USD).
