May 2011 Insurance penetration rate was established at 5.2% in 2010. It was 2.3% 10 years ago. The sector development is due to the diversity of product offers and to the emergence of new distribution channels. Since the opening in 2000 of the sector to private insurers, the latter have sustained losses of 10.4 billion USD. One third of this deficit comes from life insurers, while two thirds are borne by non-life insurers.
