Economic cost of natural catastrophes

According to a United Nations report, the economic cost of natural catastrophes reached 138 billion USD in 2012. Nearly 50% of this amount relates to hurricane Sandy and to the droughts which hit the United States.

An analysis of the economic losses caused by natural events has revealed a significant increase in damages since the mid-1990s. 2012 is the third consecutive year exhibiting losses of more than 100 billion USD. The year 2011 was by far the most dramatic with 371 billion USD of damages.
The number of deaths caused by these disasters amounted to 9 330 in 2012, 30 770 in 2011 and 297 000 in 2010.
