Mar 2014 According to the latest figures published by Swiss Re, all natural catastrophes (308 events) that struck the four corners of the globe in 2013 cost 45 billion USD of compensation to insurers, lower total of almost 45% compared to 2012 (81 billion USD).
Natural catastrophes have had an economic cost 140 billion USD in 2013 (196 billion USD in 2012), of which 62 billion USD are attributable solely to the Asian continent, which paradoxically has been compensated of 6 billion USD, due to the low penetration of insurance in this region.
Europe and the United States of America, for their part, suffered economic losses of 33 and 32 billion USD respectively, 15 and 19 billion USD being paid by insurers.
