Cost of natural catastrophes milder in 2013

A recent study by Swiss Re reveals that in 2013, 148 technical and 150 natural catastrophes have caused 140 billion USD in damages among which less than a third (32%) to be supported by insurers.

Photo credit: FEMA This amount falls below the average rate of the last ten years which is set around 190 billion USD. Worldwide, the GDP-based economic cost ratio is 0.19% for 2013 against 0.3% in the last decades. Out of the 45 billion USD sustained by insurers, 37 billion USD are accounted for by natural catastrophes and only 8 billion USD by technical ones.
