Jan 2015 Cameroon insurer, Area Assurances, is selling a new insurance policy covering the loss of smartphones and tablets. This offer is available from 7000 FCFA (13 USD) per year.
The insured persons having lost their set are given a replacement smartphone or tablet within 48 hours of the loss. Recovery of the directory is guaranteed by an application installed in the phone upon underwriting.
Finally, a tracking system is activated to retrieve the device. Although there are no official statistics of the number of smartphones used in the country, the telecommunication regulatory authority has estimated that number to be around 16 millions.
