British Petroleum (BP) has finalized in early July a tentative agreement with the American State to pay for the damages caused in 2010 after the explosion of the oil rig Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico.
This agreement will enable the British oil company to disburse only 18.7 billion USD. Five federal states have been affected by this ecological disaster. Unfortunately for BP, the amount announced in July has been deemed inadequate, thus raising it to 20.8 billion USD.
Should these sums be confirmed, the fine shall stand as the most important amount ever paid by a company in the history of the United States. This decision has to be later validated by a judge. In the event of a positive outcome, the case lodged by the federal sate will come to disposition.
Ultimately, the overall cost of the black oil leak should set BP Corporation back 56 billion USD. This figure includes all the sanctions sustained by the oil group as well as the cost of all works conducted in order to contain the catastrophe.
