On the margin of the COP22 organized from 7 to 18 November 2016 in Marrakech (Morocco), the World Bank has revealed that the natural catastrophes in the world cost an average of 520 billion USD per year.
This estimate, based on a study carried out on 177 countries, is far superior to that of Sigma, which estimates the losses at 92 billion USD.
The survey conducted by the World Bank is based on a radically different analysis of the consequences of these disasters.
It highlights the greater impact of natural catastrophes on poor countries. Each year, these events affect nearly 26 million people in underdeveloped countries.
Still, according to the World Bank, improving access to social protection, insurance and banking services can save up to 100 billion USD losses per year.
