Mar 2017 Cyclone Debbie, which hit the state of Queensland on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, in Northeastern Australia, caused significant material damage.
Of category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, Debbie brought about the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and caused many power cuts.
The damage also affected the railway lines, the main transport network of coal. Queensland is one of the world's leading coal production centers. This risk of supply chain disruptions could bring insured losses to over 1.4 billion AUD (1.08 billion USD).
As of March 31, 2017, the provisional damages borne by the insurers amounted to 763 million USD. More than 7 500 claims' notifications were sent to insurers. These figures should be revised upwards soon.
