Anbang and HNA plan to buy a majority stake in Allianz

The Chinese insurers Anbang Insurance Group and HNA have announced their intention to acquire a significant stake in the German group Allianz. The transaction has not materialized yet with political and regulatory obstacles hampering this move.

The surge in acquisitions of foreign assets prompted the Chinese government to limit the hemorrhage of foreign exchange reserves. In 2016, a record amount of 221 billion USD was invested by Chinese companies abroad.
