Meteorological events occurring during the month of July 2017 have triggered economic losses worth around 135 billion CYN (20 billion USD).
Floods are by far the most expensive events. The bill for this type of calamity alone stands at 112.39 billion CNY (16.6 billion USD), that is 83% of the total cost of the damage. Then drought and hail follow with losses of 16.16 and 5.88 billion CNY (2.4 and 0.87 billion USD respectively).
The July 2017 events have claimed the lives of at least 230 people and caused the displacement of 2.8 million inhabitants. Nearly 73 000 houses were completely destroyed, while another 600 000 were partially damaged.
The agricultural sector has not been spared with 8.84 million hectares of land having been affected by these catastrophes, 920 000 hectares of which have been totally destroyed.
