The Presidents of the Tunisian Federation of Insurance Companies (FTUSA), Habib Ben Hassine, and of the African Federation of Insurance Companies (FANAF), Adama Ndiaye, have outlined on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the FANAF, the projects and difficulties facing the insurance sector in Tunisia and in Africa in general.
Regarding FTUSA, H. Ben Hassine has presented the projects on which the organization is currently working. These include the reorganization of the Association, the development of life insurance and pension schemes, the improvement of motor third party liability insurance and the strengthening of road safety [4]. A project to digitize the sector through the setting up of a communication platform between the insurance companies is also being implemented.
For his part, A. Ndiaye recalled the challenges to meet at the African level. There are three obstacles at this leve namely the lack of an insurance obligation, the low average income of individuals and price deregulation.
As a result of these pitfalls , the average annual expenditure on insurance in Africa amounts to less than 70 USD per capita, compared to more than 2 700 USD in Western Europe. The upgrading of the sector could, in this context, lie in the reduction of long and costly contracts, the targeting of minority elites and the adjustment of policies to the socio-economic context.
