Scientists who have been monitoring the melting of the ice in Antarctica have noted the formation of a gigantic crack in the Thwaites Glacier as a result of global warming [4]. A block capable of raising the global sea level by 65 centimeters is likely to break away from the ice pack in the next 3 to 5 years.
The Thwaites Glacier has always been closely monitored by scientists since it represents a climate time bomb. In case of collapse of this part of the ice pack, a domino effect is possible. A large part of Antarctica will melt, causing the sea level to rise by more than 3 meters.
On a global level, more than 300 million people live within 2 meters of the current sea level. Many equatorial islands are at risk of disappearing. Large cities such as New York, Shanghai, Amsterdam and others along the Arabian Sea and the Nile Delta could face the same fate.
