The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has estimated that the number of road accidents in Turkey had reached 1.233 million in 2022. This figure is 3.9% higher than the one recorded in 2021.
16% of these accidents resulted in death or injury, the remainder in material damage.
The number of fatalities in 2022 has dropped by 2.5% to 5 229, while the number of injuries has gone up by 5.1% to 288 696.
The study shows that out of the 235 176 road offences resulting in death or injury, 86.8% were caused by the driver, 9.5% by pedestrians, 2.1% by the vehicle, 1.2% by the passenger and 0.4% by road conditions.
