Nov 2012 According to the figures displayed by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) in September 2012, piracy acts along the Somali coasts have dwindled down by more than 54% over one year. This decline triggered a decrease in insurance premiums for marine carriers but revived the controversy over the use of armed private forces on board of ships. Over a period of twelve months, 225 incidents targeting commercial and private ships and 70 attacks have been reported. Major international maritime routes suffer losses amounting to 12 billion USD resulting from piracy.
