Natural catastrophes on the rise in 2013

For the German insurance federation (GDV), the compensation paid for the non life insurance amounted to 69 billion USD in 2013. This figure which rose by 12% over 12 months represents the largest increase in 25 years.

This amount is accounted for by the record level registered for catastrophe losses. Of the 69 billion USD disbursed in 2013, storms and floods have resulted in losses amounting to 9.6 billion USD. Gross written premiums were up by 3.1% at 257.7 billion USD over the same period.
