The toll of the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia

The 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck Indonesia's Sulawesi Island on Friday, September 28th, 2018, killed 1234 people. This figure was communicated on the morning of October 2nd by the local authorities. The island of Sulawesi is located 300 kilometers east of Borneo.

The death toll is likely to increase over the next few hours. Rescuers are struggling to reach several disaster-stricken areas as the infrastructure of the island has been severely damaged. The breakdown in communications is preventing assessment of the damage. It is already estimated that the lives of nearly 600,000 people will be affected by the disaster.
