The year 2011 will be the most onerous in insurance history

Last December 15, Swiss Re published a survey showing that the year 2011 is the most onerous in insurance history. Insured damages attained 108 billion USD while economic losses would amount to 350 billion USD. Natural catastrophes have claimed the lives of more than 30 000 people. Until 2011, the year 2005, affected by hurricane Katrina, was the year that was most costly to insurers. In 2011, Japan’s events have affected insurers with up to 35 billion USD. The Christchurch earthquake and the Thailand floods have been estimated respectively at 12 and to about 10 billion USD.
