Torrential rains trigger mudslides in Santiago

Torrential rains struck the Chilean capital, Santiago, on 8 October 2026, triggering major mudslides that swept away vehicles, flooded homes, and forced residents to evacuate.

Six people were injured, including a one-year-old child. No fatalities were reported.

A state of emergency was declared in Las Condes, an affluent municipality in northeastern Santiago.
