Unprecedented extreme weather conditions in China

Heavy rains in ChinaHeavy rains have been pounding northern and northeastern China for over a week, causing deadly flooding and extensive damage. Beijing and the neighboring province of Hebei have been hit hardest by these disastrous conditions.

As of Saturday 5 August 2023, the death toll stood at 30, with several people still missing.

Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes. The local authorities have warned that the death toll could be even higher as clean-up operations continue.

This is the heaviest rainfall recorded in the country in 140 years.

The storm was caused by typhoon Doksuri, which was downgraded to a storm after hitting the Philippines.
