Himalayan lake flooding kills over 70 in India
Severe flooding in northeast India on Wednesday, 4 October 2023 caused a Himalayan glacial lake to overflow its banks.
Lake Lhonak is located at the foot of a glacier close to Kangchenjunga, the third highest peak in the Himalayas.
The latest death toll is as high as 77 on 8 October 2023, while over 100 people are still unaccounted for.
Bridges and roads were washed away and over 1 200 houses were destroyed.
According to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Himalayan glaciers have melted 65% faster between 2011 and 2020 than in the previous decade due to global warming.
