According to the Association of Kenyan Insurers (AKI), marine insurance [4] premiums jumped 69.4% in the first nine months of 2017, from 390.2 million KES (3.9 million USD) in September 2016 to 661 million KES (6.5 million USD) a year later. This performance is accounted for by the introduction in January 2017 of a new law requiring that importers underwrite a "sea freight" policy at the local level.
