African Insurance Organisation (AIO)

On the occasion of the African Insurance Organisation 30th Conference holding in Zambia, Atlas Magazine devotes its columns to the Pan African organization.

Identity

Profile: Founded in 1972, the African Insurance Organization (AIO) is a non-governmental organization, with headquarters in Cameroun.

Structure: AIO has a general secretariat headed by the Secretary General. The General Assembly appoints the President, Vice-President and the Executive Committee Members.

Membership: Today, the AIO counts 285 members from 46 countries. The membership of AIO is open to:

  • insurers
  • reinsurers
  • brokers
  • control authorities
  • educators and trainers
  • insurance associations in Africa

Objectives

  • the promotion of inter-African cooperation,
  • the development of a healthy insurance and reinsurance industry

Activities

  • Holds the annual African insurance conference and a General Assembly,
  • Organises seminars and workshops aimed at improving the competitiveness of African insurance markets,
  • Publishes the African Insurance Annual Review, conference and seminar documents,
  • Established the African Aviation Pool and the African Oil and Energy Insurance Pool,
  • Established the Association of African Insurance Brokers, the Association of African Insurance Supervisory Authorities and the Association of African Insurance Educators and Trainers,
  • Established the African Reinsurance Forum,
  • Set up Book Awards to encourage the writing of well researched books on insurance,
  • Established the AIO credit assessment program in partnership with S & P Insurance Ratings, London, and the UNCTAD,
  • Developed an insurance operating software for non-life insurance companies in Africa.

Priority areas for the future

  • Consolidate and strengthen the pools and associations set up by AIO,
  • Promote insurance education and training,
  • Promote computerisation within African insurance markets.
