Agricultural insurance is not popular

On October 10, 2014, a seminar on agricultural insurance was held in Tunis by the ministry of agriculture. Stakeholders agreed on the need to adopt a number of reforms to support the industry.

Structural changes including legislative and financial plans and the introduction of new incentives for insurance have been suggested. Moreover, the participants highlighted the need to introduce some compulsory covers.

The high indebtedness of the sector and the small number of farmers insured are hindering the development of this market, where only 7% of farmers are insured. Agricultural insurance accounts for only 4% of the total turnover of the sector. This figure is steadily going down from year to year.
