Alternative reinsurance is gaining ground in Asia

According to Guy Carpenter, alternative reinsurance accounts for 6% of the limits underwritten on the Asian continent. Of all the patterns of securitization, "cat bonds" stand as the most common kind of alternative reinsurance.

This type of coverage is growing from year to year in Asia even though the reinsurance market there is shrinking in terms of premiums. This trend is accounted for by a combination of factors including the devaluation of local currencies.
Guy Carpenter has, nonetheless, noted continued growth for the limits purchased for natural catastrophe risks.
