Bam earthquake, a provisional toll

The earthquake that hit South East Iran Friday 26 December 2003 and claimed 40 000 dead et 50 000 wounded, entirely or partially destroyed 60 % of the dwellings in the district of Bam, which include the city of Bam (100 000 inhabitants) and the surrounding villages. The historical part of the city, archeological gem of the country, was completely destroyed.
The quake epicenter, 6.8 on the Richter scale according to the information center of the Geological Institute of the United States, was close to Bam.
