Dai-Ichi Life buys Protective Life for 5.5 billion USD

Dai-Ichi Life has just completed the acquisition of the US insurer Protective Life for an amount of 5.5 billion USD. The operation, announced in June 2014, is the most internationally-significant acquisition by a Japanese insurer.

This purchase should be for Dai-Ichi a new growth engine and should overcome the difficulties encountered in Japan due to the aging of the population.

In 2013, Protective Life generated a turnover of 2.98 billion USD and a profit of 393 million USD. The insurer ranked 36th in the US market in terms of premiums.

As a reminder, Dai-Ichi Life had already acquired in 2010 Tower Australia Group, an Australian life insurance for the amount of 1.2 billion USD.
