French insurance market results in 2015
The turnover of French insurance amounted to 208 billion EUR (227.3 billion USD) in 2015, up by 3.9% compared to 2014.
It is life insurance which dominated the market with premiums' collection worth 156 billion (170.5 billion USD) and a growth of 4.7% compared to the previous year. This segment accounted for 75% of the total underwritings of the year.
The growth rate of non life insurance was more moderate with only 1.5% and a turnover of 52 billion EUR (56.8 billion USD).
In terms of results, the first figures highlighted a deterioration in the average combined ratio of motor insurance from 104% to 106%. This decline would be justified by the increase in the compensation costs of material damages and bodily injuries.
Motor insurance, which represented only 38.5% of non life premiums, accounted for 50% of the claims in this category.
Unlike motor, homeowner's insurance improved its combined ratio by three points, from 96% in 2015 to 99% in 2014. Compensation for natural disasters amounted to 1.5 billion EUR (1.64 billion USD) in 2015.
