Life insurance, smokers penalized

For an Indian smoker, online tariffs of Aviva i-Life are 56% higher than those for a non-smoker for a capital insured worth 10 million INR (183 000 USD) scheduled over 10 years. For such coverage, the premium for a non-smoker amounts to 7 853 INR (143 USD) per year compared to 12 292 INR (225 USD) for a smoker. This difference is accounted for by the fact that, statistically, a smoker is likely to contract more diseases than a non-smoker. According to Aviva, nearly 275 million Indians have smoked in 2012. This figure has progressed by 4.19% compared to 2011.
