Natural catastrophes status in 2015

The cost of economic damage caused by natural catastrophes in 2015 reached 90 billion USD, down by 3.33% compared to the previous year. With 27 billion USD, the insured losses represent only 30% of the total.

While  the 2015 economic losses were in decrease, the death toll was three times higher than the one in 2014 recording 23 000 deaths. Noting that over the past three decades, the average annual casualties amounted to 54 000 deaths.

In 2015, the climate-related events accounted for 94% of the number of natural disasters. The Nepal earthquake alone has claimed the lives of 9 000 persons and generated 4.8 billion USD of economic losses.
