Nearly 146 000 killed on the roads

According to the ministry of transport, approximately 146 000 people lost their lives on the Indian roads in 2015. Road accidents also resulted in the injury of more than 500 000 persons. These figures have peaked in the recent five years.

By comparison, in 2014 road crashes accounted for the death of 139 671 people while 493 474 others were wounded. According to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP), the country’s GDP will be slashed by 3% because of the cost of these accidents.
