New anti-seismic building standards in the UAE

Following the recent earthquake that struck Iran, the Emirati authorities have imposed new seismic building standards. They require that all buildings over 10 floors have to withstand shocks above the 5.9 magnitude on the Richter scale.

According to the new division into two areas, buildings over 4 floors and under 10 including hospitals and schools located in zone 2A are required to withstand shocks of 5.5 compared to the 5.9 magnitude for those in zone 2B. This new directive, which has been in force since late May, covers all the structures under construction as well as those to come.
