Road safety, a major issue
Tunisian roads are among the most hazardous throughout the world. Everyday, between 4 and 5 people lose their lives on the roads. Official statistics report 87 deaths for 100 000 vehicles compared to 9 in France, 8.9 in Germany and 6.9 in Switzerland.
For the year 2015, the national observatory for road safety (ONSER) reported 1 407 deaths and 10 882 injuries. The government has done very little to counter this scourge: safety belt requirement, discarded on numerous occasions, is compulsory only in inter-city travel; road radars, destroyed by citizens, have never been replaced; road infrastructure is inadequate; the point scheme driver license has been cancelled; road offences are not penalized.
The Revolution has triggered no change when it comes to road safety. Road accident-related losses are costing the State 700 million TND (346 million USD). As to the insurance industry, the motor class of business is sustaining structural deficits.
