The penalty point system reactivated

In order to face the heavy toll of 98 049 accidents having claimed the lives of 885 people in 2006, the Jordanian Federation of Insurance Companies is planning to reactivate the penalty point system for driving licenses. This type of driving license shall allow the increase of the insurance premium according to the number of accidents caused by the motorist.

Established in 1988, this system of driving license, which includes 16 points, almost fell into abeyance because of the social consequences of license withdrawal on offending motorists. The Federation's statistics show a 17.7% increase in national car fleet in 2006 compared to 2005, that is, a total number of 800 000 vehicles for a population of 5.5 million inhabitants.
