WHO: emergency approval of Sinovac vaccine
The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the Sinovac vaccine on 1 June 2021. This is the second Chinese vaccine against Covid-19 after Sinopharm to be cleared by the WHO in less than a month.
Recommended for people over 18 years old, Sinovac is 57% effective in preventing Covid-19 and 100% effective in preventing severe cases and hospitalizations. The vaccine has not been evaluated for efficacy in people over 60 years of age.
The addition of Sinovac to the list of vaccines licensed by the WHO allows adherent countries to have greater access to the Covax synthetic.
As a reminder, 23 countries, including China, Brazil, Turkey, and Tunisia, are using the Sinovac vaccine.
