Extreme weather events intensify in East Africa

Extreme weather events in East AfricaWaterAid, a non-governmental organization specializing in water, sanitation and hygiene, has published a report revealing that several major cities in East Africa have been facing an increase in extreme climate events.

Nairobi (Kenya), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Kampala (Uganda) are experiencing more frequent episodes of severe drought and flooding.

For its part, the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, has been witnessing a shift from extremely wet to extremely dry weather.

This intensification, known as “climate whiplash”, is particularly tough on vulnerable communities, especially in low-income countries.

Major social and infrastructural vulnerability makes it extremely difficult for populations to adapt and cope with climatic shocks.

Prolonged drought can mean water shortages, food insecurity and power cuts.

Meanwhile, intense rainfall triggers flash floods that force people into displacement, damage roads and spread water-borne diseases.

The report also highlights the ever-growing need for adaptation efforts to forestall and combat the effects of climate change.
