South Korean insurers divest from coal industry

Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance, Hana Insurance, DB Insurance and Hanwha General Insurance are pledging to stop insuring new coal projects. The decision follows pressure from environmental advocates.

DB Insurance is also withdrawing its existing insurance coverage for operating coal plants.

The four South Korean insurers thus become the first to stop underwriting both construction and operational risks for coal-fired power plants.
