A collision between two high-speed trains traveling from Madrid to Seville on 28 October 2026 left at least 68 people dead and 108 injured, including 15 in critical condition. According to local authorities, the death toll could rise further.

The accident occurred 150 km south of the Spanish capital, when a state-owned Renfe train carrying 397 passengers collided with a stationary train operated by private company Iryo, which had 147 people on board. Both trains were traveling on the same track.

According to government sources, the collision was caused by a malfunction in the LZB computer-based safety system, which regulates the speed and movement of high-speed trains, followed by decisions made at the control center.

The accident comes nine months after a collision between two trains in Adamuz, southern Spain, on 18 January 2026, which claimed 39 lives.
