Southern Europe has been ravaged by a wave of exceptionally intense wildfires for more than three weeks, fueled by extreme weather conditions including drought, soaring temperatures, and strong winds.
Spain is among the hardest-hit countries. Four people, including two firefighters, have lost their lives, and several others have been injured. Since the beginning of the year, nearly 350 000 hectares have been reduced to ashes, a record for the country. Thousands of residents have also been forced to evacuate.
In Portugal, on 20 August, nearly 4 000 firefighters were battling four active fires. More than 20 000 hectares have been burned, and four people have lost their lives. The country is experiencing its worst fire season in recent years.
Greece is also facing a critical situation, with over 10 000 hectares scorched in just three days. Evacuations of residents and tourists have been carried out in affected areas.
In Turkey, the fires have disrupted the tourist season, forcing the evacuation of several hotel complexes.
