Vehicle electrification is not enough to meet decarbonization targets

May 26, 2023

Vehicle electrificationAccording to the Automotive Platform (PFA), representing manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, subcontractors and mobility players in France, the massive arrival of electric vehicles on the market is not sufficient to achieve the market's decarbonization targets.

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are expected to account respectively for 50% and 20% of sales by 2030 and 14% and 17% of the vehicle fleet. This upward trend would result in a 23% reduction in CO2 emissions in the next seven years. This gain remains, however, lower than the 40%, threshold set as part of the national low-carbon strategy.

To achieve climate objectives, the PFA proposes to act on other levers that are mainly based on the evolution of uses. These include the reduction of mileage traveled through car-sharing or carpooling, the shift towards soft mobility (cycling, public transport, etc.) and better maintenance of vehicles on the roads.
