Over 800 urban sites at risk of flooding in Algeria
The National Delegation for Major Risks has identified 865 urban sites in Algeria at risk of flooding.
A new strategy must be adopted to deal with this type of risk, based initially on monitoring, prevention and forecasts, before moving on to the intervention, recovery and return-to-normal phases.
These were the statements made by Abdelhamid Afra, National Delegate for Major Risks, during an interview on national radio.
The inculcation of a culture of prevention among citizens also seems to be a key measure that can help limit the negative impacts of flooding.
The recent torrential rains, which swept across the country on 2 September 2023, triggered deadly flooding. The provisional death toll was no less than 8 in the Wilayas of Tlemcen and Al Bayadh.
