155 earthquakes strike central Japan
A series of 155 earthquakes struck the Noto peninsula in central Japan between 1 and 2 January 2024.
The most severe of these quakes registered a magnitude of 7.6, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). This quake, felt as far as Tokyo, triggered a tsunami along the coasts of the Sea of Japan. Most of the other tremors were of magnitude 3 or higher.
Cracked roads, destroyed old houses, fires in the midst of smoldering ruins - this was the damage caused by the successive tremors.
Local authorities have reported 62 deaths and several hundred injuries.
